Trying to eat healthy? Here are some tips to help you succeed

Trying to eat healthy? Nutrition can be the hardest part of any health goal. Especially when you’re new to eating healthy or have struggled in the past. Making this lifestyle change isn’t easy or everyone would be doing it. Here are some tips to help you succeed when you’re struggling to eat healthy! 

Drink water

I know you’ve probably heard this tip before, but it really works! When switching over to a healthy diet, you’re going to experience changes. The most common change in the early stages is experiencing hunger. Oftentimes this “hunger” is actually dehydration or thirst. You should be drinking ¾-1 full gallon of water each day, and if you’re working out, it can be almost double that! So if you’re feeling hungry, and you just ate not too long ago, go drink a glass of water and see if the hunger subsides. If it doesn’t, then you know the hunger is legit and it’s time to eat again!  

Control which foods go in your house

I know this might sound a little crazy, but it’s much harder to eat an entire bag of Doritos when you don’t have a bag of Doritos nearby. Either avoid purchasing those items, or strategically organize where you store your food. Place the healthy foods at the front of the fridge/cabinet prepared and ready to eat, and store the less nutritious foods toward the back of the fridge/cabinet so they’re not in eyesight. This way, you won’t constantly be reminded of all the unhealthy foods you have and will instead opt for the healthier options. Doing this will help you create new habits and decrease the amount of junk food cravings you have.

Make healthy foods convenient to eat

Going off of the last tip, make healthy foods convenient/easily accessible! Meal prepping is a great example of this. Meal prepping is essentially making your meals ahead of time and storing them in the fridge to be consumed throughout the week. There are multiple ways to meal prep and it’s important to find a method that works for you and that you enjoy. For example, I enjoy prepping food not necessarily meals. What I mean by this is that I’ll cook some chicken and store it in my fridge. Throughout the week I’ll use this chicken for my different snacks and meals. I enjoy this method because I like to mix up what I eat and am not always craving the meal I may have prepped. If you’re new to meal prepping, give it a try and see what works for you!

Repeat your meals

I know it’s nice to eat different foods, but there are also benefits to repeating meals. When you’re starting out a new healthy lifestyle, it can be hard to know what foods are going to help you reach your goals. For this purpose, I suggest finding a few different meals that you know will help you reach your goals and repeat them. I eat almost the same thing everyday until I get sick of the meal then I will switch it out for something different. Then you won’t have to track your macros/calories everyday. You can relax knowing that what you’re eating will help you get to your goal.

Switch things up! 

I know this contradicts the last tip, but for some people, eating the same thing everyday is torture. What I recommend is finding a few healthy recipes that you know can help you reach your goals and rotate through! I love finding new recipes and they help me stay excited about my food.


Starting a new lifestyle change can be overwhelming or stressful. So this tip is to remind you to relax and that you’re allowed to still eat unhealthy foods every once in a while. Allow yourself to eat foods that you love, go out with friends and enjoy family bbq’s. There is a time when you need to be strict and there is a time to enjoy yourself. Learn how to portion control and those types of situations will become less stressful for you. The stress that you have around those situations are going to do your body more harm than a piece of cake ever will. 

Trying to eat healthy can be hard, especially when it’s not what you’re used to. Give these tips a try and see if they help you succeed! Figure out what works for you, mix up your meals or create a routine to help you stay on track and remember to relax.
